In the 12th century Margrave of Baden built the gothic castle Altes Schloss on a hill near the city. In 1306, Baden authorities drew attention to thermal fountains. The Badon resort (as it was called in the fourteenth century) began to develop again. In 1507, for the first time in German history, a resort fee was introduced here. It was then that the resort of Baden gained world fame.

The resort gained particular popularity thanks to the Russian aristocracy. Nee Badenprincess louise (Russian wife Tsar Alexander I) was the first to bring fashion to rest in Baden. Great princes and dignitaries, famous artists and writers traveled to German soil. In Baden, "at the water" at different times went Tolstoy, Turgenev, Chekhov, Gogol and Dostoevsky.
